GAZING OR ADMIRING?
(Mr. Hko, Grammarian and Counselor)
Well, I am not a Muslim but one valuable lesson I had learnt in my entire life during my services as a teacher in an Islamic Secondary School was to always “LOWER MY GAZE”. If ever a teacher or a male student was seen gazing at one of the fully-clothed girls of the school, it meant outright dismissal. Even in the classrooms, partitions have been constructed to separate the boys from seeing the girls. Obviously, the intent is to always KEEP BOTH SEXES ON TRACK AND TO REMAIN FOCUSED, hence no gazing or distractions whatsoever may occur.
Literally, gazing is to stare intently or earnestly. Gazing could indeed really be dangerous! Biblically, King David, an anointed man of God, fell and got corrupted and defiled during the act of gazing! No wonder biblical Job made a covenant with his eyes (Job 31:1) [so he doesn’t gaze at what is worthless] . We could unconsciously or consciously gaze at the wealth, glamour, or ostentatiousness portrayed everywhere in our neighbourhood or on social media. Same could be said of the pulchritudinous and solid contours of a maiden (female). This has an intensive effect on our memory and could really influence us negatively (unless you are drawing inspiration). Gazing could breed envy or jealousy in us and this could even affect us mentally.
Gazing, in any form could be very dangerous and it is prudent we lower it at all times and rather keep FOCUS on our own lives. Yes, do not stare unnecessarily at any material or fleshy thing – for this could be a snare to endanger our physical, moral, emotional spiritual and every possible aspect of our lives. Remember, Keep FOCUS on your own life and never swift from your aspirations in life and your purpose on earth.
